After a Hailstorm: Document Damage and Prepare for Inspection
Once a hailstorm passes, start with safety—not a trip onto the roof. Wait until conditions are safe, and keep away from downed power lines, broken glass, and damaged structures. Look for damage from the ground rather than climbing onto a roof that may be slippery or weakened.
Take photos and video before moving damaged items or making temporary repairs, if you can do so safely. Capture wide views and close-ups of dented gutters, damaged screens, broken windows, siding marks, and any visible interior leaks. Note the storm date and when you first noticed the damage, but leave uncertain causes for a qualified inspection.
Take reasonable steps to keep the damage from getting worse, such as moving belongings away from leaks and safely containing dripping water. If roof covering or other work at height is needed, use a qualified professional rather than attempting it yourself. Save receipts for emergency work and materials; reimbursement depends on your policy and the circumstances.
Report the damage to your insurer promptly and ask what information it needs before the inspection. Write down your claim number, the assigned contact, and any instructions you receive. Review your policy for reporting requirements and wind or hail deductibles, and ask the insurer to explain anything you do not understand.
Prepare a short list of affected areas so the inspection includes more than just the roof. Include gutters, siding, windows, fences, outdoor equipment, and interior stains where damage is visible. Keep photos, receipts, contractor findings, and insurer correspondence together, and avoid discarding damaged items before asking whether the insurer needs to inspect them.
If possible, attend the inspection and point out your observations without guessing about damage you cannot see. Before nonemergency permanent repairs begin, ask whether the insurer needs additional documentation or an opportunity to inspect, and read any contractor agreement carefully before signing.
